Bingham Canyon Copper Mine Highwall Failure
If you're part of the mining industry, then undoubtedly you've seen these photos this week. These photos are from Bingham Canyon mine, which is a major copper mine in the US, and represents about 6% of Rio Tinto's profit.
This wall failure had been predicted back in February, and there was no-one in the pit at the time of the incident. Estimates place the size of the failure at several tens of million cubic yards.

Yallourn Wall Collapse
I don't know much about this incident, other than that it happened at the Yallourn coal mine about four years ago. Looking at the photos, it looks like water from the creek piped through behind the wall, causing it to fail.

Highwall Failure at Eaglefield
This incident comes from the Eaglefield mine, in the Bowen Basin. It looks like this shot was being loaded at the time of the failure.

Sunrise Dam Highwall Failure
Since tonight is the Masterchef finale, I thought I'd have a bit of cross-promotion. If you've watched the show this year, you'll know that the contestants went to the Sunrise Dam mine in WA for one of their challenges.
This major highwall failure comes from the same mine, and occurred earlier this year. These photos were sent in by a reader. Thanks!
